Die steel: the base of the mold manufacturing (2)

Development of new materials for mold steel

Mr. Uemura Yukihiko: DRM was developed by Japan's Datong Special Steel in recent years. In order to achieve high hardness and high toughness of high-speed steel, the coarse carbides are reduced to the limit, the service life is increased, and the mold cost is reduced.

The reason why it is called high-speed steel is because it is different from ordinary high-speed steel. After heat treatment, crystalline carbide (primary carbide) and precipitated carbide (secondary carbide) still exist and cannot be dissolved into the matrix. After heat treatment, the crystalline carbide and precipitated carbide of DRM matrix high-speed steel can be solid-dissolved into the matrix to reduce coarse crystal carbides, thereby better suppressing the occurrence of cracks and improving toughness. In the use of the mold, there will be large cracks, micro cracks (fatigue cracking) and wear. In order to prevent such occurrences, the toughness, the fatigue strength and the hardness should be improved. This is also the DRM high hardness and high toughness base steel. The necessity and particularity.

The DRM series is divided into DRM1, DRM2 and DRM3, which can be applied to multiple ranges.

DRM1 is a high-speed steel that achieves high hardness and high toughness that cannot be achieved by general hot work tool steel. It has higher toughness than conventional base high speed steel and is suitable for various hot and warm forging dies. It is mainly used for punching and punching in hot forging; punch and die for warm forging. Its main features are: 1 can be used at a maximum hardness of 58HRC. 2 High hardness, high toughness, and heat crack resistance are also good. 3 It has the same level of fine structure as the hot die steel, and has high toughness compared with the existing base high speed steel. 4 softening resistance is high, high temperature strength is also good. 5 Because it is specially dissolved, it has few non-metallic inclusions and is excellent in homogeneity.

DRM2 is a base high-speed steel that can work in a wide range of conditions, such as warm and cold press tools. It achieves higher hardness and toughness than previous high-speed steel, and is suitable for various temperature, inter-temperature forging, cold forging, and powder metallurgy molds. It is mainly used for forging punches and dies at the temperature; forging punches and dies for cold. Its main features are: 1 can be used at a maximum hardness of 62HRC. 2 The structure is fine, the toughness value is high, and the fatigue characteristics are good. 3 The hardenability is good, and the quenching of the large diameter material and the vacuum heat treatment can maintain high performance. 4 Because it is specially dissolved, it has few non-metallic inclusions and is excellent in homogeneity.

DRM3 has been upgraded from the previous MH85, and its high hardness and high toughness are suitable for high-speed steel corresponding to vacuum quenching for high-precision product forming. Suitable for all kinds of cold molds. Mainly used in cold forging punches, die; cold work rolls, engraving rolls; vacuum quenched high-speed tool steel, tools. Its main features are: 1 can be used at a maximum hardness of 66HRC. 2 Carbide is fine, and has higher toughness and high fatigue strength than SKH51. 3 Good hardenability, high performance in quenching of large diameter and vacuum heat treatment furnaces. 4 Because it is specially dissolved, it has few non-metallic inclusions and is excellent in homogeneity.
