Plastic pellets are usually less than 5 mm in size, and most of them are very small and can't be seen by the naked eye. Scientists worry that these tiny plastic particles can pose serious health risks to the human body. Existing laboratories have found that nanoscale plastic fragments can even enter the interior of cells and eventually cause tissue damage. Plastic particles can also cause accumulation of hazardous chemicals in the body, including the pesticide DDT and toxic PCBs.

Recently, researchers at East China Normal University inspected the sea salt of 15 brands in Chinese supermarkets, and also analyzed lake salt, rock salt and well salt, and found that 550 to 681 plastic particles per kilogram of sea salt. Even rock salt and well salt are contaminated, with up to 204 plastic particles per kilogram of salt. The findings were published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society's Environmental Science & Technology.

Scientists say that nearly 100 million tons of plastic waste is thrown into the ocean every year, and some of the plastic particles have even contaminated sea salt. It is understood that the researchers analyzed the sea salt produced in China and found hundreds of tiny plastic particles per kilogram of salt. This means that, according to the current recommended nutrient dosage, consumers consume an average of about 1,000 plastic particles per year, and for those who regularly eat shellfish, they can eat up to 11,000 plastic particles per year.

There are two main sources of plastic particles in the ocean. One is the decomposition of large pieces of plastic waste, including plastic bottles and industrial plastic waste. The second is the addition of tiny particles to scrubs, lotions, toothpaste and other cosmetics. The plastic particles in the paste, as well as the tiny plastic particles, are easily absorbed by marine organisms such as plankton and shellfish, and remain in the food chain, and are passed up to large fish to humans. This tiny particle can even pass through the water filtration device and flow to the ocean. In order to protect marine life, plastic particles in scrub facial cleanser, shower gel and toothpaste will be phased out.
