According to Japanese media reports, on September 13th, Japan's Nisshinbo Holding Co., Ltd. successfully achieved the first practical use of platinum (Platinum)-free fuel cell catalysts in the world.
By replacing carbon with platinum, the material cost of the fuel cell can be reduced to about a few thousandth. Battery prices have always been the bottleneck of fuel cell vehicles. The results of Nisshinbo's current development are expected to promote the adoption of fuel cell vehicles that lag behind pure electric vehicles.
It is reported that an electrode containing reduced oxygen is contained in a fuel cell that generates electricity through the reaction of hydrogen and oxygen. In the past, platinum was used as a catalyst for electrodes.
In the Nisshinbo area, platinum is replaced by a carbon catalyst called "carbon alloy." By modifying the process of incinerating carbon, a molecular structure capable of activating oxygen reduction was produced. It is said that the power generation efficiency is almost the same as that of a platinum-based fuel cell.
It is reported that Nisshinbo will first supply catalysts for fuel cells with output power of 30 watts to Ballard Power Systems, a large Canadian fuel cell company. Ballard will start selling such batteries for portable electronic devices in December 2017. The output power of 30 watts is equivalent to the charging capacity of 6 smartphones.
