China's rare earth new material preparation technology has achieved a major breakthrough

According to the Ministry of Science and Technology on October 15th, during the "12th Five-Year Plan" period, the 863 Program set up the topic of "Ultra High-Purity Rare Earth Metal and Alloy Energy-Saving and Environmental Protection Preparation Technology" in the field of new materials technology and was led by the Beijing Nonferrous Metal Research Institute. After several years of research and development, the project has made a series of significant progress, and successfully passed the inspection and acceptance of experts organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology in late June this year.

Based on the integration innovation of rare earth metal preparation and purification technology and equipment, the research group has broken through the key technologies for the preparation of ultra-high purity rare earth metals and has independently designed and developed 14 sets of special purification equipment such as ultra-high vacuum distillation furnaces and cold heading zone smelting furnaces. Complete sets of ultra-high-purity rare-earth metal engineering technology; prepared 13 types of ultra-high purity rare earth metals.

In addition, the research group also carried out R&D and made significant progress in the engineering technology of variable-temperature lanthanum magnesium-lithium alloys and variable-valence lanthanum-aluminum-lithium alloys produced by low-temperature molten salt electrolysis, which can replace the current production of magnesium oxide rare earth alloys and variable-value rare earth metals with high energy consumption and high pollution. Technology has now been implemented on a 100-ton production line.

The implementation of the “Ultra High Purity Rare Earth Metals and Alloys Energy-Saving and Environmental Protection Preparation Technology” project has enabled China to break through foreign long-term technical blockades in ultra high purity rare earth preparation technologies and products, and to upgrade the grade of rare earth products in China. The added value has effectively enhanced the core competitiveness of production enterprises and promoted the continuous development and growth of the rare earth electrolysis industry in China toward the direction of green environmental protection.
