Andrew Mills, a professor at Strathclyde University in the United Kingdom, is leading researchers to develop this smart bag.
If food such as meat, fish, and vegetables exceeds the shelf life or is stored outside the refrigerator for too long, freshness will be impaired. According to the Mills team's vision, when the freshness is reduced to a certain limit, this smart plastic bag will change color. It also reminds people to store sealed food in the refrigerator.
If the packaging breakage endangers the quality of the food, this plastic bag also has warnings.
The researchers said that it can also help people distinguish the "best consumption period" and "quality shelf life", do not worry about eating bad stomach.
According to statistics, approximately 1 million cases of food poisoning occur each year in the United Kingdom. The British "Daily Mail" quoted Mills as saying: "We hope it will reduce people's risk of eating spoiled food. We hope it will have a direct impact on the meat and seafood industry."
Can change air
The “freshness indicator†that people usually use today is a label placed in a food packaging bag, and the cost is not low.
Mills and others hope to develop a new indicator to integrate it with plastic bags to reduce costs. Mills said: "The current promotion of 'air conditioning bags' principle is mainly to suppress the decomposition of organic foods, but the price is considerable. We plan to develop new plastic products to reduce prices."
The new food packaging bags will have the function of "breathing" like air conditioners to extend the shelf life of foods. Instead of adjusting the temperature, “air conditioning†reduces the amount of oxygen in the sealed bag, filling it with nitrogen and carbon dioxide to reduce the natural spoilage rate of the food.
If the oxygen value in the bag exceeds a predetermined value, the plastic bag will also change color.
Help save
Official statistics show that British families throw away about 8.3 million tons of food each year. Each year, 364,000 tons of edible food is thrown away because it exceeds the “optimal consumption period,†and 39,000 tons of food has not been opened.
Mills said: "Today people throw away too much food. This is a kind of destruction both for the environment and economic development."
Mills said that the first smart bags will be available within two years. This will help housewives reduce waste.
