European Joint Research Team Successfully Synthesized Graphene Another "Cousin"

Two-dimensional material terpene

A European joint research team such as Aix-Marseille University successfully synthesized graphene as another cousin, namely the two-dimensional material germanene. The material is composed of single-layered germanium atoms or has excellent electrical and optical properties, and may be widely integrated in various electronic devices in the future. The results of this study were published in the September 10th issue of the New Journal of Physics.

This two-dimensional material was first proposed in 2009, but as of now, researchers are still difficult to achieve it. Since then, graphene has been further developed, and other two-dimensional materials such as silicene have been synthesized.

According to the report of the Physicist Organization Network on September 10, the method used to synthesize this material is similar to that of siliconene. In an ultra-high vacuum, a single germanium atom is deposited on a substrate at a high temperature. Researchers have already synthesized the material onto a platinum substrate.

The researchers said: “According to the previous route to synthesize silicon, we naturally tried to synthesize this new material in the same way by depositing germanium onto the silver base. However, this attempt failed and it was decided to switch to a platinum substrate. Platinum is grown on a silicon substrate. This will be another way worth trying."

After deuterium atoms were deposited on a platinum substrate, the researchers measured the electronic structure of the material through spectroscopic measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and could actually confirm that it was a terpene. Also, the material was scanned through a tunneling microscope to reveal the characteristic honeycomb structure of its 2D material.

The researchers believe that this material may grow on a flexible gold film substrate, which will undoubtedly be cheaper than platinum materials to allow its large-scale synthetic growth. In addition, its unique properties may make it a solid two-dimensional topological insulator, especially at room temperature, which opens up the possibility of using this material for quantum computation.

The researchers said: "The synthesis of this material is a long-term task. At present, it is only the beginning. In fact, successful synthesis is not easy to achieve, and the conditions are very harsh. There is a lot of work to be done. What is needed now is to further study the material. Electronic characteristics." (Hua Ling)
