Clamp ammeter measurement operation notes

What is a clamp ammeter?

The clamp ammeter is a very convenient test instrument that can measure the current of a live conductor without being disturbed by a circuit.

When using an ordinary multimeter for current measurement, we need to disconnect the wiring and connect the instrument and the circuit as shown in (Figure 1).

In the current measurement using a clamp ammeter, we simply clamp the measured object as shown in (Figure 2).

The advantage of this test method is that large currents can be tested without closing the circuit.

How to test DC current:

As with the AC current test AC, the object to be measured is clamped by the forceps. In the DC current test, the current reading of the clamp ammeter is positive (+) when it flows from top to bottom.

Clamp ammeter measurement principle:

The measuring principle of AC-DC clamp current meter

Hall sensors are typically used to test DC currents. Because the AC clamp meter can not use electromagnetic induction method. Hall sensors are placed as shown below. The generated magnetic flux is proportional to the main DC and AC currents in the clamp head. This is how the Hall sensor detects the magnetic flux and diverges it as the output voltage.

Hall sensor: A semiconductor that generates a proportional voltage to the bias current generated by the measured object and generates an output terminal magnetic field when the bias current is applied to the input terminal.

Clamp ammeter how to operate?

In general, the operation of the AC clamp ammeter is based on the CT principle, and the CT principle is often used to obtain the magnetic flux through the conductor. Assuming that the current through the conductor is the main current, we can obtain a current proportional to the main current through the electromagnetic induction generated by the secondary coil of the clamp head (the secondary coil is connected to the circuit of the measured object). This allows us to read the AC current (in the digital clamp ammeter)

Select and set standard insulation values for each measurement range and compare them with readings.

Find the result by comparing the fail or pass signal displayed on the screen with the attention buzzer

Beep alerts can be associated with fail or pass based on user requirements.
