Scientists use vitamins to create high-capacity, low-cost liquid batteries

Recently inspired by the body's energy storage mechanism, researchers from Harvard University have come up with a way to make an alkaline liquid battery using modified organic vitamin B2. These molecules are not only non-toxic, non-flammable, but also have very low manufacturing costs. The research team believes that this will enable people to no longer be confined to intermittent energy sources such as solar energy and wind energy, and it will bring a revolution in large-scale energy storage.

The liquid battery can be recharged cyclically, and when it receives energy from a green energy source such as solar energy or wind energy, the electrons in the positive electrode solution can be introduced into the negative electrode solution, so that the current is generated.

Normally, the voltage generated by this battery is between 1.0 and 2.2V. Of course, the larger the volume of the solution tank, the greater the energy that it can store.

Prior to this study, Harvard scientists had used metallic organic compounds such as terpenoids as substitutes for metal ions. Acidic solutions were used here. Later, they also produced terpenoids that could generate electricity in alkaline solutions.

Finally, the scientists decided to find a more environmentally friendly anthraquinones. Eventually they discovered that vitamin B2 is a very good choice. It is understood that vitamin B2 can take energy and store it when people digest food, which inspired scientists to try to use it in the production of liquid batteries.

Of course, the researchers did not set vitamin B2 in the first place. They also came to this conclusion after a lot of screening. At the same time, they also intend to study in depth, and then develop a high-performance, long-lasting organic-based liquid battery.
