Scientists develop new self-cleaning concrete with characteristics of light weight and sturdiness

Like anything else, concrete structures can become dirty over time, and cleaning them is cumbersome. However, now the scientist has developed a brand new self-cleaning concrete, which can save these unnecessary steps.

In general, self-cleaning materials work by combining hydrophobic (waterproof) surfaces, which cause the liquid to bead up and roll down, while allowing dust and dirt to be carried away with the liquid. However, previous attempts to add hydrophobic materials to concrete have not been completely successful. For example, when used as a surface coating, they will eventually be scratched or worn over time. When mixed into concrete in a wet state, they will reduce their strength when dried.

Under the leadership of Professor Xu Xin, researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China proposed another option. They first combined wet concrete with oil, emulsifiers and a hydrophobic silicone polymer called polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The mixture is then formed into droplets and dispersed throughout the concrete matrix.

When they then dried and heated the concrete, the oil evaporated, leaving holes with a small drop of PDMS coating. It turns out that the resulting material has a high degree of hydrophobicity-repels a variety of liquids-while also being lightweight and strong.

More importantly, even after being polished, it will not be exposed to extreme heat and harsh chemicals, it still maintains its self-cleaning quality. In addition, it has also been found to have good sound absorption and thermal insulation properties.

Scientists hope that this concrete can be used not only in buildings and other structures, but also on anti-bacterial surfaces in hospitals and other environments. Scientists recently published a paper on the study in the Journal of Applied Materials and Interfaces of the American Chemical Society.
