Over 80% of the world's soybeans are genetically modified products

On March 1st, ISAAA released an annual report in Beijing, which stated that in 2012, the global acreage of genetically modified crops reached approximately 170 million hectares, an increase of 6% over 2011. According to the planting area statistics, about 81% of the world's soybeans, 35% of corn, 30% of rape and 81% of cotton are genetically modified products.

The report shows that the top five countries in terms of planting area of GM crops are the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, and India. China's planting area is about 4 million hectares, ranking sixth in the world. The vast majority of them are transgenic insect-resistant cotton (accounting for 80% of China's cotton planting area), and a small amount of papaya, tomatoes, and sweet peppers.

The report shows that in 2012, eight developed countries and 20 developing countries planted genetically modified crops, one less than in 2011. Sudan and Cuba have joined the ranks of countries that have planted GM crops, and they have planted GM cotton and corn. Three countries withdrew, among them, Germany and Sweden related companies no longer planted genetically modified potatoes because of market factors, Poland because the relevant laws and regulations do not meet the requirements of the EU, stop planting genetically modified corn.

Huang Dazhao, a researcher at the Institute of Biotechnology of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, said that GM technology can increase crop yields and product quality, reduce the use of pesticides and carbon dioxide emissions, and increase farmers' income. At present, there is not sufficient scientific evidence to prove that GM foods have health hazards. People's fears and fears are mainly due to the lack of understanding of GM technology and biosafety.
