Members of the research team are from the University of Surrey and Trinity College, Dublin. They inject graphene into ordinary rubber bands and retain flexibility after special treatment. Since the graphene can conduct electricity, even if there is a slight movement after these rubber bands are connected to the power source, they can be detected by the minute current flowing through the material. According to the team, this can be used to detect bodily functions such as breathing, pulse, and joint motion, which can alert the guardian when the patient breaths or changes in heart rate.
Due to its low material weight and low cost, it can be easily combined with other components to make individual sensor accessories for fragile patients, such as preterm infants. Professor Jonathan Coleman of Trinity College in Dublin said that "these sensors are very cheap compared to the existing technology, and only a few pence per device can be used to provide the most effective and ideal monitoring facilities for medical monitoring."
