Four ministries investigate the discovery of illegal GM crops in Northeast China

Since April, research on the safety of genetically modified organisms has been intensively conducted in many provinces and cities in China.

On April 28th, a reporter of “Daily Economic News” learned from the informed sources that a joint research team composed of four ministries, namely, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Environmental Protection, has gone to Shandong, Shanxi, and Northeast China to carry out in-depth development. Transgenic safety research.

An official from the Ministry of Environmental Protection told the Daily Economic News reporter that Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council recently issued instructions on the safety of genetically modified organisms and asked the relevant departments to form a research group to conduct research. According to written instructions, the State Council’s Food Safety Committee held nine meetings on genetic modification and other issues to discuss, followed by instructing the agricultural sector as the main body to carry out research in some provinces and cities.

It is reported that the investigation of the four ministries and commissions has now concluded and the final research report is being formed. According to the above-mentioned sources, the biggest problem identified in this survey was the presence of illegal genetically modified crops in some places. The planting of illegal transgenic crops was found in Northeast China.

Uncertainty in three aspects of genetic modification

Informed sources told the Daily Economic News reporter that after in-depth investigations, they found that management was not strict enough.

At the Fourth International Symposium on Genetically Modified Organisms on April 28th, Jiang Gaoming, a researcher at the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, pointed out that there are at least three uncertainties in transgenics: First, the chain reaction after the change of life structure is uncertain; It is the uncertainty of potential risks in the food chain; third, the uncertainty in the methods of pollution, proliferation, proliferation, and elimination.

At the same time, he emphasized that the safety of genetically modified crops is a long-term topic. If GM crops are put into large areas, especially in a country's staple food production environment, they will damage the natural ecosystem. In the long run, it will affect human health and food security.

Existing research shows that GM crops will destroy natural ecosystems, harm non-target organisms, especially beneficial organisms, reduce biodiversity and food diversity, and in addition lead to “super weeds”.

The national “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” also specifically proposed that “strengthen biosafety management and increase the protection and management of biological species resources”.

It is recommended to implement the "monitoring and supervision system"

Jiang Gaoming also pointed out that the emerging biotech, such as genetic transformation, still has many uncertainties such as the chain reaction after the change of the life structure.

The person familiar with the matter said that it was precisely due to uncertainty that the long-term can not be solved and other reasons, the relevant ministries were dissatisfied with the monitoring of genetic modification, and ultimately compressed the special fund for transgenic animal and plant cultivation.

Last year, the State Council executive meeting reviewed and approved in principle major science and technology projects for the cultivation of new varieties of genetically modified organisms. It mentioned that a special fund for genetic research of RMB 20 billion will be realized by 2020. An official from the Ministry of Environmental Protection questioned whether such a large sum of money is necessary to conduct genetic research on all crops. At the same time, the official suggested a risk assessment.

The above-mentioned Ministry of Environmental Protection officials said in an interview with the reporter of the “Daily Economic News” that the Ministry of Environmental Protection has now made recommendations on the safety of genetically modified organisms. Among them, in terms of safety certificates and environmental release of genetically modified crops, it is recommended to implement a "monitoring and supervision system". For example, the quality inspection and other departments involved in the final need to undergo risk assessment. "If there is no risk or the risk is low, it should not be killed by sticks."

On the forum on the 28th, GM researchers also stated that they should establish a joint approval and information disclosure system.

Wang Jie, director of the National Biosafety Management Office of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, told the Daily Economic News reporter that in the field of life safety, many problems have not been clarified either in the world or in the country.
