New Japanese material can remove radioactive cesium and strontium at the same time

Japan’s Hitachi Institute of Technology issued a communique on the 4th that a new type of adsorbent developed by it can remove radioactive cesium and strontium in water at the same time. It is expected to be used for sewage treatment at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

This adsorbent is in the form of particles and is produced by special treatment of titanate compounds. In the experiment, this adsorbent was able to remove radioactive cesium and terbium equal to 3000 times its own volume at the same time, and the clearance rate was over 99%. In seawater, this clearance rate will not decrease.

In the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, sewage containing high concentrations of radioactive materials continues to increase, and there is a risk of leakage. This R&D project was conducted to solve this problem.
