Is genetically modified soybean oil really carcinogenic?

Reporter Ma Aiping

A few days ago, an analysis report of “highly correlated genetically modified soybeans and tumors” of the Soybean Association of Heilongjiang Province triggered a “spirit of saliva” among GM opponents and supporters.

The issue of genetically modified food safety has once again been pushed to the cusp.

There is no genetically modified element in transgenic soybean oil

According to the “2012 China Cancer Registry Annual Report”, there are approximately 3.5 million new cases of cancer each year in China, and about 2.5 million people died of cancer. Wang Xiaoyu, deputy secretary-general of the Heilongjiang Soybean Association, said: “I have based my experience in the food industry for 20 years and found that the cause of cancer may have a significant correlation with genetically modified soybean oil consumption.”

Analysis of Wang Xiaoyu, Henan, Hebei, Gansu, Qinghai, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Guangdong, Fujian and other places, basically the consumption of genetically modified soybean oil in our country concentrated areas, these areas are also China's tumor concentrated area. Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Zhejiang, Shandong, Hunan, Hubei, Guizhou, etc., basically do not rely on the consumption of genetically modified soybean oil, and are not the areas where tumors are concentrated.

"Our association's conclusion is that consumers who consume genetically modified soybean oil are more likely to suffer from cancer and infertility. Therefore, genetically modified soybean oil should not be used for commercial consumption before it can be safely concluded," says Wang Xiaoyu. In April of this year, he handed over the report to the Heilongjiang Provincial Agriculture Commission. He hopes to pay attention to it, but he has not received a reply so far.

On June 21, at the opening day of the National Food Safety Risk Assessment Center, Chen Junshi, a researcher at the center and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said that there was no epidemiological evidence for the genetically modified soybean to cause cancer.

Chen Junshi said that the import of genetically modified soybeans and the high incidence of cancer in China are all facts, but the combination of these two things is groundless. He believes that there is not even a genetically modified component in genetically modified soybean oil. “Transgenic soybean oil is the most common genetically modified food that can be eaten. Strictly speaking, any genetically modified ingredient should not be detected in genetically modified soybean oil because the gene is a protein that has been eliminated from soybeans and refined into oil. Food safety The regulatory authorities have a very good detection method, even if trace amounts of protein can be detected from soybeans entering the oil.”

Zhu Yi, associate professor of the College of Food Science and Nutritional Engineering at China Agricultural University, agreed with Chen Junshi. He said: "First of all, the occurrence of cancer is caused by multiple factors. It is impossible to explain with a single factor. Second, in the United States, for example, the consumption of genetically modified soybean products in the United States is more than that of China, and the incidence of cancer in the United States should be higher than that of the United States. China, but in fact, there was no significant increase in cancer incidence before and after eating GM soybeans."

Lin Min, director of the Institute of Biotechnology of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, also believes that this lack of scientific basis is irresponsible. “If an association stands in the position of itself and the company behind it, without experimental data, without peer review, without investigating research, not listening to medical experts, releasing such irrefutable remarks may cause unnecessary panic. This actually hurts consumers’ consumer confidence, hurts the interests of GM-related practitioners and companies, and is an unfair business competition. It is hoped that the government can carry out appropriate legal proceedings.”

"There is still no scientific support for genetically modified soya related to cancer and infertility."

As an opponent of genetically modified soybeans, Wang Xiaoyu said that from a number of experiments abroad, genetically modified soybeans are highly related to cancer and infertility.

The foreign experiments mentioned by Wang Xiaoyu can be traced back to 2010.

In 2010, scientists from Russia's National Institute of Genome Safety and the Institute of Ecology and Environment Alexei Surov and other scientists jointly conducted experiments to select common soybeans with widely different genetically modified components in agriculture, and to feed Campbell's hamsters with rapid reproduction rates for two years. The results prove that GMOs are harmful to mammals. Researchers have found that animals that eat genetically modified foods will lose reproductive ability.

Lin Min said that the scientific basis for this study has not been proven so far. The relevant research has not been published in any academic journals but has only been published in the media, but no complete scientific data has been published. Mainstream scientists believe that this case does not have scientific basis and cannot be evaluated. It is not scientific and authoritative.

In September 2012, scientists such as Seralini of the University of Kane, France, published a research report in the Journal of Food Chemistry and Toxicology, saying that through a two-year classification experiment conducted on 200 experimental mice, it was found that using genetically modified corn NK603 and being "Rongda" contaminated feed-fed mice are prone to tumor and visceral damage.

At the request of the European Commission, the EU Food Safety Authority immediately set up a working group to review the study, and on October 4, 2012, initially believed that there was a deficiency in this study, and two other French regulators reached similar conclusions. . On November 28th of that year, the EU Food Safety Authority issued a final conclusion on the study of "carcinogenicity of genetically engineered corn" in France, claiming that this study lacks scientific basis. In the process of risk assessment, the design, reporting, and analysis links are not scientific enough and rigorous. The safety of transgenic maize NK603 was again evaluated.

What are the reasons behind the "genetic cancer" argument?

As an important means of increasing agricultural output, "transgenic" has become the general trend of agricultural development.

Imports of genetically modified soybeans have existed in China for 16 years. In 1997, China imported 2.88 million tons of soybeans. In 2012, this number was 58.38 million tons, which accounted for 3/4 of the total soybean consumption in China.

Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture approved the issuance of three genetically modified soybean safety certificates that can be imported for processing. According to Shi Yanquan, deputy director of the Department of Science and Education of the Ministry of Agriculture, at present, China has issued an import safety certificate for five genetically modified soybean varieties and 13 genetically modified corn varieties.

With the large number of imported GM soybeans, their quality and price advantages quickly emerged, squeezing out some of the original domestic soybean market, and the cries of domestic soybeans came and go. Heilongjiang, as one of the world's source of soybeans, has been pushed to the front by half of the national output.

Since 2002, Heilongjiang Province has subsidized the soybean planting industry at a rate of 10 yuan per mu, and on May 19, 2007 it established the Provincial Soybean Association.

"We are a province of GM soybeans against four countries, the United States, Brazil, Argentina, as well as new Paraguay, can be described as stressful." Wang Xiaoyu said.

Lin Min believes that in the face of competition, efforts should be made to improve the quality of non-genetically modified soybeans instead of turning into irrational attacks on the safety of genetically modified foods.

Peng Yufa, deputy chairman of the Agriculture Genetically Modified Organism Safety Committee, also said in an interview with the Xinhua News Agency on June 14th that China’s safety review of the three new genetically modified soybean varieties is very prudent and the safety is guaranteed.

“The consensus reached by international authoritative agencies on genetically modified safety is that any genetically modified food that is listed through safety evaluation is as safe as non-GM food, and it can be safely consumed.” Lin Min said that such consensus is based on a solid scientific assessment. From the first GM crop field trials in 1987 to the promotion in 1996, genetic modification has become one of the fastest growing technologies in the history of human science and technology. In 2011, 70% of the world's population lived in countries that have approved the cultivation or import of GM crops. If "Genetic cancer" is indeed based on evidence, then so many countries are irresponsible to the health of the people. This is unreasonable. (Technology Daily, Beijing, June 22)
