GM soybean dispute

Boycott or accept? The controversy over GM soybeans once again set off the storm. On June 6, the Ministry of Agriculture approved import safety licenses for three genetically modified soybean varieties from Monsanto and BASF, which means that the number of genetically modified soybean varieties in the Chinese market will reach 11.

Monsanto, genetically modified, and imported shocks are all domestically produced. Under the impact of such public opinion, imported soybeans are actually more of a helpless choice.

GM soybean import schedule

June 6, just a node. It is not the first time or even the last time that genetically modified agricultural products have entered the table. The Chinese people have long had genetically modified products on their diets.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the GM crops that were approved for import in the first half of 2013 included a total of three soybeans, two types of corn, and two types of cotton. The characteristics of the three soybean transgenic plants were herbicide-tolerant, insect-resistant, and insect-resistant herbicides, and they were from Monsanto and BASF.

Before this new batch of three varieties of genetically modified soybeans was imported, the Ministry of Agriculture had not approved the import of new genetically modified soybeans for at least three years. Since the introduction of genetically modified soybeans in 1997, a total of 11 varieties have been released.

In fact, even in the eyes of the Ministry of Agriculture, which is responsible for the approval of imports, this approval is quite prudent. Peng Yufa, deputy director of the Agriculture Genetically Modified Organism Safety Committee, said that China has been very cautious about the safety review of these three varieties of genetically modified soybeans. It has taken three years from application to certification.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture's "2004-2011 Imports of Agricultural Genetically Modified Organisms Used for Processing Raw Materials", a total of 79 transgenic crops were approved within seven years, of which soybean, rapeseed, cotton, and corn were the most important varieties. 32 of the oil and gas approvals accounted for nearly 40%, of which 8 were soybeans, 24 were rape, and soybeans were only 1/3 of the rapeseed.

As the original country of origin of soybeans, under the pressure of genetically modified varieties, the once industrial advantages of Chinese soybeans are slowly being squeezed, but the sound of domestic soybeans being defeated sounds somewhat sensational.

“The reduction in soybean production in Heilongjiang is not unrelated to the impact of imported soybeans,” Wang Xiaoyu, deputy secretary-general of the Heilongjiang Soybean Association, told the new financial reporter. Inadvertently, the person in charge of the Heilongjiang Soybean Association's remarks about the import of genetically modified soybeans and the incidence of cancer made it a hot topic.

Since the beginning of the import of genetically modified soybeans in 1997, by the end of 2012, most of the soybeans imported from China were genetically modified soybeans. Because of the high oil yield, they are mainly used for the crushing of soybean oil, and 90% of the edible soybean oil currently sold on the market. All are genetically modified soybeans.

The imported GM soybeans in China are mainly processed into soybean oil. Strictly speaking, soybean oil after scouring and purification does not contain genetically modified ingredients, because its main component is fat, and the product of the transgenic product is protein. Peng Yufa believes that China is more stringent than the EU, Japan, and South Korea in importing genetically modified foods.

Who defeated domestic soybeans

"The association between domestically produced soybeans and imported soybeans is not as big as imagined," said Zhu Yi, an associate professor at China Agricultural University.

As the debate over the pros and cons of GM soybeans is raging, the Northeast farmers who have engaged in soybean production have already chosen to vote with their feet. Author: Peng Junyong
