China will promote the development and utilization of geothermal energy from four aspects

China will promote the development and utilization of geothermal resources from the aspects of conducting shallow geothermal energy surveys, carrying out resource potential surveys in key regions of the country, and initiating the evaluation of the potential of hot dry rock resources.

This was stated by Wang Min, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Land and Resources, at the high-level forum for the National Land Resources System to address global climate change and energy conservation and emission reduction.

The interior of the earth is a huge heat pool with abundant geothermal energy. Geothermal energy is a renewable, clean energy source that can be divided into shallow geothermal energy (200m shallow), geothermal (200m to 3000m), and dry hot rock (3000m below) resources according to burial attempts. China is a big country with geothermal resources. Vigorously promoting the development and utilization of geothermal energy is an inevitable choice for reducing CO2 emissions and coping with global climate change.

Wang Min said that China has a vast area and the amount of shallow geothermal energy available is huge. From 2009 to 2010, the Ministry of Land and Resources and Tianjin jointly carried out pilot work on the evaluation, development and utilization of shallow geothermal energy in Tianjin and achieved important results. It is estimated that the energy resources available for shallow geothermal energy in 287 cities above the city level are equivalent to 350 million tons of standard coal per year. If it is effectively developed and utilized, it can save 250 million tons of standard coal and reduce 500 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. This achievement has not only broken the previous conclusion that the potential for shallow geothermal energy development and utilization in the country was only 60 million tons to 80 million tons of standard coal, but also proved that there is broad prospect for the development and utilization of shallow geothermal energy in China.

China is located in the tropical eastern part of the Mediterranean-Himalayas, and contains abundant high-temperature geothermal resources in southern Tibet, western Yunnan, Western Sichuan and Taiwan. At the same time, medium and low-temperature geothermal resources are widely distributed in the Mesozoic-Cenozoic basins such as the Bohai Sea Basin, the Songliao Basin, the Sichuan Basin, and the Ordos Basin. According to the results of the survey and evaluation of the land and resources system for many years, the country’s geothermal resource reserves are equivalent to 853 billion tons of standard coal, and the total amount of geothermal energy that can be mined each year is equivalent to 640 million tons of standard coal, which can reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other 1.3 billion tons annually.

In addition, from the geological conditions for the occurrence of dry hot rock, China's Qiongbei, West Yunnan, southern Tibet, southeastern coastal areas and other places all hope to find dry hot rock resources, which may become an important geothermal energy development base in China.

Wang Min stated that in order to promote the development and utilization of geothermal energy, during the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, the Ministry of Land and Resources will initiate geothermal resources investigation and development and utilization projects: First, it will carry out national shallow geothermal energy survey and evaluation to identify the characteristics of shallow geothermal energy distribution. And conditions of occurrence, evaluation of shallow geothermal energy resources and development and utilization potential, preparation of shallow geothermal energy development and utilization plans, and vigorously promoting the development and utilization of shallow geothermal energy; Second, the investigation of resource potential in key regions of the country to identify regional geothermal resources Potential to strengthen the development and utilization of low- and medium-temperature geothermal resources; Third, to start the assessment of the potential of hot-hot rock resources, actively promote the development of high-temperature geothermal power generation and hot-hot rock, and fourth, to develop shallow geothermal energy, low- and medium-temperature geothermal resources, high-temperature geothermal resources, and Hot rock development and utilization demonstration, optimization of geothermal resources development and utilization model.
